The Legislature formed the township on March 22, 1871, from part of Roxbury, and Netcong was split off from it in 1894. The name honours Benjamin Olive, a colonial-era lieutenant governor of New Jersey who donated land for churches in the area. Budd Lake and Flanders are close in size, with 9,784 and 9,832 people in 2020, and the township also takes in Bartley, Saxton Falls and Waterloo.

The Seward Mansion in Mount Olive was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December 2013 for its architecture. The Mount Olive Village Historic District, which includes the Mount Olive Baptist Church and its schoolhouse, followed in August 2015. Vasa Park was set up in 1936 by a Swedish cultural society on a 126-acre former farm, and it holds summer and retirement homes, picnic grounds, a banquet hall and a research library. On Budd Lake stands the Pax Amicus Castle Theatre, a community theater built in 1970 to look like a medieval castle. The township library became a municipal library in 1986 and opened its new building on Flanders-Drakestown Road in 2005. U.S. Route 46 runs through the center of the township.
