Dutch farmers from New Amsterdam came into the area in 1710 and called the creek and valley "Uyle-Kill," or Owl-Kill. Work on the first road began in the 1740s, and that road is now U.S. Route 202. The first schoolhouse in the township, built of logs, went up in 1760. During the Revolution the area lay on a military route from Morristown to the Hudson River, and French troops under General Rochambeau spent four days crossing it on the way to Yorktown. In 1820 Montville had 16 houses, and the Morris Canal was completed through the area in 1828. The population in 1910 was 690. From 1962 to 1989 the Pine Brook Speedway ran midget car races, and Mario Andretti had some of his earliest success there.
