A DryerJack 477 roof-mounted dryer vent replaces an existing roof termination or installs new through the roof. The DryerJack is constructed from heavy gauge 26 gauge Galvalume steel with a curved damper, large vent opening, and integrated magnets. The unit sits low-profile on the roof to minimize snow and ice buildup.
Replacement of an existing roof termination is $600. New installation through a new roof penetration is $800.

Roof-mounted vents require proper flashing and sealing to prevent roof leaks. The DryerJack is engineered to accommodate standard roof penetrations and provides a large opening with a curved damper that keeps pests outside and allows full airflow without restriction. The 21 square inch vent opening far exceeds the minimum IRC requirement of 12.5 square inches for dryer exhaust terminations.
Installation includes cutting the roof opening (if new), installing roof flashing, mounting the DryerJack securely with fasteners, and sealing the penetration with roof-grade sealant. The roof is inspected to ensure the installation is watertight. The damper is tested to verify proper operation and full airflow.
The result is a roof termination that drains condensation properly, exhausts lint safely, and protects against weather and pest entry.

Why Roof Dryer Vents Clog Faster
Second story and roof runs are longer and carry more elbows than a short first floor run, so lint settles faster and packs tighter. The same buildup that restricts airflow also traps moisture, which is why these systems clog sooner and run hotter. If your dryer vents through the roof, a yearly cleaning is the minimum, and heavy use makes a second visit worth it.
Checking the exit matters just as much as cleaning the line. Most companies clean from inside the house and never go up to where the vent ends, leaving a clogged cap, a screen, or a bird nest behind. Building code doesn't allow screens on dryer exits because they trap lint, and a blocked exit chokes the dryer no matter how clean the duct is. Cleaning is $225 when the vent ends on the second story and $265 when it ends on the roof. Both include going up to check the exit, a camera scope before and after, and an airflow test at the end. Roof runs also carry a moisture risk. Dryer exhaust is hot and moisture laden, and when it passes through uninsulated duct in an attic, exterior wall, or crawl space, the moisture condenses on the cold metal.

Replacing a Roof Vent vs. Installing a New One
If you already have a roof termination that needs replacing, we replace it with a DryerJack 477 for $600. If the dryer needs a new path out through the roof, a new installation through a new roof penetration is $800.
Either way, the roof is flashed and the penetration is sealed with roof-grade sealant, the roof is inspected to make sure the installation is watertight, and the damper is tested for proper operation and full airflow. The DryerJack's 21 square inch opening is well over the 12.5 square inches the IRC requires for a dryer exhaust termination, and its curved damper keeps pests outside.

A roof vent is a small metal hood or short pipe coming up through the shingles, with flashing at the base and a cap with a flap that lifts when air flows. Low profile versions sit closer to the roof surface. If the dryer is on the second floor or in the interior of the home, a roof termination is common.
A brown stain on a ceiling can come from a roof vent run. Before assuming roof failure, a plumbing leak, or window flashing, check whether the dryer vent runs through the affected area. If the stain sits roughly between the dryer and the roof vent, along the path the duct would take, the vent is more likely involved, but that is not proof on its own. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors lists improper dryer vent installation and lack of insulation in unconditioned spaces as common moisture problems in attics and wall cavities.
