Hanover Township holds the first European settlement in northwest New Jersey, started by New Englanders in 1685 along the Whippany River near the old cemetery on Route 10. The township once covered all of Morris County and parts of Sussex and Warren counties, and it later gave up land to form places including Rockaway Township, Boonton, Mountain Lakes, Morris Plains, East Hanover and Parsippany-Troy Hills. Until suburban growth after World War II, the river powered iron works and paper mills here. In 1927 a radio link from Whippany to New York formed part of the first long-distance television demonstration in the United States. The Seeing Eye was based in the township from 1931 to 1966. The New York Red Bulls now run a 15-acre development facility here.
