It grew out of New Hanover, a settlement founded in 1715 by families from New York and Connecticut. The Legislature made it a town inside Morris Township in 1865, and the split from the township became final in 1895.
Both the county and the town are named for Lewis Morris, the colonial governor who pushed for colonists' land rights. Morristown's part in the Revolutionary War earned it the name 'the military capital of the American Revolution', and the sites from those years now make up Morristown National Historical Park, the first national historical park in the United States.

The town covers 3.01 square miles, has two Interstate 287 exits, and in 1999 became one of New Jersey's first five transit villages.
